Bilbao's futuristic airport is Sondika, 9km north of the city. Designed by Santiago Calatrava, it's known by locals as "la paloma" (the dove), though its graceful curves are said to have been inspired by whales. Calatrava likes his buildings and bridges to be curvy and white. The airport is efficient, spacious and easy to navigate with lots of good facilities airside. Major airlines flying to the airport include Iberia, easyJet, ClickAir, Lufthansa and Aer Lingus.
